CONGRATULATIONS MSE CLASS OF 2013!
President Obama Honors Outstanding Early-Career Scientists

July 31, 2012 - MSE Alum, Keith Knipling, was among 96 researchers to receive a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, which is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. Government on young science and engineering professionals. Keith completed his B.S. in MSE in 1998 and his master's in MSE in 2002, both at Virginia Tech. He completed a Ph.D. in MSE at Northwestern University in 2006. Keith works at the Naval Research Lab in Washington, D.C., and is one of 16 scientists who received the award for research related to the Department of Defense. Kudos to Dennis Hollich (MSE, 2010) who went to work for Marine Corps Systems Command following graduation in 2010. He was recently featured in an MCSC press release written by Carden Hedelt. Congressional Visits Day held April 10-11, 2013

Five MSE seniors participated in the 2013 Congressional Visits Day. CVD is a two-day annual event bringing scientists, engineers, researchers, educators, and technology executives to Washington to raise visibility and support for science, engineering, and technology. This year, 5 MSE students had an opportunity to meet with U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith, representative for Virginia's 9th District. He talked with the students at length about university expansion planning. Pictured above, left to right, are Tyler Dietrick, Haley Cherniuk, Morgan Brown, Rep. Congratulations to Dan Drew, who was recently awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. The NSF GRFP "helps ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science and engineering in the United States and reinforces its diversity. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines who are pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees at accredited US institutes." The 3-year fellowship includes tuition and a monthly stipend. Dan plans to use his fellowship at UC Berkeley to pursue a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. |

The 2011 Graduate Edition of the U.S. News and World Reports is out and VT MSE is
ranked 22nd in the nation. The Undergraduate program is ranked 17th in the nation
according to the 2011 Undergraduate Edition.

The scholarship was established by Chaparral Steel as a tribute to Ronald Lincoln and is awarded to individuals who exemplify the qualities of leadership and innovation for which Mr. Lincoln was so well known throughout his career. |

| Kelly Ramsburg wins DOD SMART Scholarship! - Tuesday, August 02, 2011 | | | 
Kelly Ramsburg, a Junior in MSE, has won a Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service through the Department of Defense. This program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working in DoD laboratories. Her scholarship includes full tuition for two years, a cash award, and a paid summer internship. After graduation, Kelly will work in the Sensors Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory for two years. More information about the SMART program can be found at http://smart.asee.org/. |
