MSE Advice to Transfer Applicants

Transfer students are always special cases--each is different. You must apply directly to the University Undergraduate Admissions for entrance into the University and the College of Engineering. Once accepted, you must work with the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education, and likely with various departments, for transfer of your courses from your current institution. Special considerations apply to transfer students from the Virginia Community College System.

All transfer students are encouraged to contact Ms. Jan Doran as soon as they know they are interested in MSE. The Department will work with you to help fill in missing prerequisites and assure a logical and orderly transition into our program. Often, this process can be lengthy and early planning is advised.

The MSE Department is always interested in hearing from transfer students who expect to major in materials science and engineering. Visitors are always welcome in the department both to talk to faculty and staff about their career interests as well as to attend classes which may be of interest to them. Please contact Ms. Doran to discuss your interests and schedule appointments.

Special note to residents of West Virginia and Delaware: The MSE Department at Virginia Tech is the Academic Common Market department for this state. Residents of West Virginia and Delaware who are enrolled in the MSE Department may attend Virginia Tech by paying Virginia in-state tuition. Please contact Ms. Doran for further information.
