Low Resonant Frequency ME Sensor Design

Zengping Xing
MSE Department, Virginia Tech

Abstract

Magnetoelectric(ME) effect of materials has been received great interest due to its potential application in sensor, transducer, etc. Large ME effect could be achieved by using laminate composite instead of particulate composites which is formed by the combination of particle piezomagnetic phase and particle piezoelectric phase. we developed a new Tb 0.3 Dy 0.7 Fe 2 (Terfenol-D)/steel/Pb(Zr, Ti)O 3 (PZT) laminate. Experiment al results show that this ME laminate with size of 32 ´ 6 ´ 1.7mm 3 exhibits a high ME coefficient of 37V/cm.oe at resonant frequency of 5.13 kHz which is very low compared to the ME laminate reported . Other typical ME structure will also be discussed in this talk.
