Abstract

In real world applications, there are many instances where electronic components will be unavoidably exposed to radiation. This exposure can be detrimental or even fatal to the function of the device. Integrated circuits can be exposed to solar radiation in space, radiation from nuclear reactors on earth, or fallout from a hypothetical nuclear blast during war.

In this paper, we will discuss the effects of radiation on semiconductors and electronic components, as well as methods currently used in industry to alleviate these effects in sensitive circuitry. We will also discuss several important applications for this technology in use today. Radiation hardening is necessary for circuitry in spacecraft, communications satellites, nuclear reactors, defense systems, and weapons control systems.
