When John Kroehling arrived at Virginia Tech in 1942, he planned on majoring in chemical engineering. However, the war and a football scholarship redirected his plans. After spending his freshman year immersed in ROTC, football, wrestling, baseball, and academics, he responded to a summons from the U.S. Army in the spring of 1943 and joined the World War II effort.
With the promise of a football scholarship, he re-entered school in 1946, a year when civilians outnumbered cadets for the first time in Virginia Tech history. With this return to school, Kroehling joined the Ceramic Engineering Department, which was small and afforded a lot of individual attention and an informal atmosphere.
Since 1948, Kroehling has enjoyed a long and varied career, starting with jobs concentrating on bricks and refractories, and finally catalytic oxidation systems. Since 1991, he has been involved with his own company, J.H. Kroehling Associates, where he designs catalytic oxidation systems for industrial pollution control.
Kroehling has served on the MSE Advisory Board, and he is a member of the College of Engineering Comittee of 100. In May 2004, Kroehling was inducted into the College of Engineering Academy of Engineering Excellence, which recognizes alumni who have made outstanding contributions to the profession of engineering. In 1998, he and his wife established two scholarship funds at Virginia Tech, one in MSE and the other in the Statistics Department, they have also provided for a deferred gift, which will be shared between the two departments.
