Biography for Dr. H. Felix Wu
Dr. H. Felix Wu holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering with minors of Operation Research and Theoretical & Applied Mechanics from Cornell University (1987) and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University (1979). He has more than 16 years work experience in industry and 9 years project/program management experience in Federal government, with broad-based expertise in high-performance fibers, polymers, composite materials/structures, and engineering mechanics. Specialties include structural health monitoring (sensors), homeland security, materials characterization, damage tolerance and fracture, lifetime prediction/environmental durability, material interfaces, analytical surface science, high-temperature applications, and biomaterials/biomedical devices.
He joined the Advanced Technology Program (ATP), National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) as a Program Manager in Chemistry and Life Sciences Office in July 1997. As an ATP Program Manager, Dr. Wu has managed more than 49 ATP-funded R&D projects working with various industries (automotive, offshore exploration & production, civil infrastructure, metals/ceramics, and life sciences) with a total budget over $210 M in the areas of fiber/polymer composites, automotive, offshore E&P, civil construction, sensors, fuel cells, metals, ceramics, and life sciences.
Prior to joining ATP, Dr. Wu was a Senior Project Leader at the Owens Corning Science and Technology Center, Granville, Ohio, where he led a cross-functional team to conduct fundamental and applied research including long-term durability, materials interfaces, mechanical behaviors, micromechanics, surface science, fiber forming and polymer processing of reinforcements and their composites. As a Senior Project Manager at the Alcoa Technical Center, Aluminum Company of America, Alcoa Center, Pennsylvania, Dr. Wu was the key contributor in the development of a new family of fiber-metal laminates (ARALL and GLARE structural hybrid laminates). He led R&D efforts in fiber/metal hybrid laminates, statistical/materials characterization, composite interfaces, quality assurance, and design allowable development for aerospace and automotive industries. Dr. Wu was a Mechanical/Design Engineer for Control Data Corporation, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where he developed innovative electromechanical components for computer peripherals.
Dr. Wu has been honorably appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University since 1999. He served as an Advisory Committee member for two Ph.D. students in Department of Materials Science and Engineering in Virginia Tech (1994-1997) and in Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering in Kansas State University (1996-2001).
Dr. Wu has published more than 148 refereed papers as well as given over 113 invited technical presentations and involved in organizing 11 international symposia/workshops. He is a Fellow of U.S. Department of Commerce Science and Technology (ComSci) and a Fellow of The Ohio Academy of Science.
