Roanoke Electric Steel Corporation
Roanoke, Virginia

Students from the Metals and Alloys and Transport Processes classes, along with instructor, Kathy Rohr, participated in a plant tour at Roanoke Electric Steel last October.

Assistant Quality Manager, Wendy Munro (above, center), lead students through the production process, from scrap heaps, that feed the furnaces to the bundling of finished merchant stock for shipment to customers.
Students were able to observe the fiery furnace while workers injected oxygen into the molten metal. They also watched as multiple strands of white hot billets emerged from the continuous casting machine, saw cast and cooled billets move through pre-heat furnaces, and tracked the steel through the rolling process and on to sectioning and packaging for shipment.
